Swimming
Pools
When the hot weather comes,
the backyard swimming pool becomes a popular place. Nothing provides
instant relief from hot weather quite like a swimming pool. But a pool
can be a site for tragedy if common sense rules aren't followed.
Most swimming accidents are
preventable, but sometimes people can become so relaxed under sunny
skies that they forget to use common sense. The Peel Regional Police
would like to share a few guidelines to promote fun & safety during
the pool session.
- Backyard pools must be
enclosed with a fence that meets the municipality law for height and
other requirements. It should prevent direct access from the house,
have gaps no more than ten centimetres to prevent climbing, and have
a self-closing, self-latching gate with an inside latch for permanent
locking. Close the pool gate, save a child's life.
- Never leave furniture
near the fence that would enable a child to climb over the fence.
- Most children who drown
in backyard pools gain access from the house. If your pool is not
fenced off from the house, install child resistant locks at least
1.5 metres (five feet) above the floor on all doors leading to water.
- Encourage sobriety from
your guests when entertaining near the pool.
- Designate a "pool
supervisor" who knows CPR. It is advisable for parents, guardians
and babysitters to know CPR.
